What is Annotations?

It’s a newsletter from a writer, journalist, author and editor who always has more to say and loves to share ideas, tips and stories about favorite pastimes. Annotations offers stories from across my interests:

  • History — particularly personal, family, my homeland and World War II. I have written a memoir (coming out in fall 2024 from Potomac Books) about my father and his service as a paratrooper in World War II. I performed so much research and uncovered such interesting information, but not all of it fit into the narrative. So I’m excited to share more of it here.

  • Bicycle Touring — focused on the Pacific Northwest and down the Pacific Coast to Mexico, with occasional forays into other lands. I am the author of two bicycling guidebooks from Mountaineers Books, and love to share rides, routes and tips on bicycle touring that complement those books, “Biking Puget Sound” and “Cycling the Pacific Coast.”

  • Growing Food — organic vegetable gardening and apple orchards, particularly. I started life on a farm, but until I moved to the Maritime Northwest I did not catch the gardening bug. Finding I could grow my own food year-round hooked me, and I’ve been studying and practicing it for more than three decades. I’ve written two books on the subject, “Edible Heirlooms” and “Cool Season Gardener.” As with bicycling, I love to share what I’ve learned.

  • Family and Life — my influences and inspirations.
